Good morning all,
It has come to my attention through work safe and other authorities that all facilities that have CO2 gas on their premises will be required to install CO2 monitors come the 1st of January 2012. This is in relation to an Australian Standard AS 5034 which will become law on the previous date mentioned.
All facilities including us and to name a few, all hotels, clubs, fast food outlets( Hungry Jacks, MacDonald’s, Kentucky fried etc.) wineries, breweries, workshops, and anywhere else that use CO2 to dispense, and carbonate drinks. As far as we are concerned, we need to monitor the cool room and the fermenting room. So 2 monitors per store. These monitors can be installed by you or me. We only need an electrician to come in and hard wire them in. This is so that nobody can turn them off. As far as I can work out, the monitor in the fermenting room will start alarming as soon as the CO2 levels get up to the dangerous levels and it will keep going off until you arrive the next day and open the door and vent the room. This is going to be unavoidable.
Also, they may make us change how we set up our regulator board in the cool room. I am yet to confirm that. As I know more I will keep you informed on their decisions.
Below is a copy of what is proposed as far as the system in the cool room goes. I know that it not very clear but what they are saying is that we need to have a Primary reduction regulator, Secondary reduction regulator, Isolation valve per keg feed, Pressure relief valves, Non return valves, etc.
I have been speaking to BOC about what they are willing to offer and that price was $2,200 per gas monitor and $160.00 every 6 months to re-calibrate the detector. I indicated that this was not good enough, so I have been in contact with several companies that distribute CO2 monitors and have had some positive feedback regarding pricing.
As it stands at the moment, if I was to order 32 detectors from this particular company, the cost would be $585.00 each monitor. These monitors come already calibrated to the parameters that this standard requires. They can also be tested by the designated person in the store to test the calibration every 6 months and record their findings in the log book that you will be required to keep.
The low cost CO2 + Temperature monitor specifically designed to meet AS5034. The CO2 monitor should be fitted per 80m2 & a max distance of 10M apart. It should be located approximately 450/500mm above ground level & close to the CO2 cylinders/tanks (within 3-4M max).
The CO2 monitor unit is supplied with:-
One sensor unit c/w:- CO2 & temp display (SEU)
: NDIR CO2 sensor ranged 0-5%
: Audible & visual alarms
: Sensor seal cap (used when area is being washed down)
: Alarms set at 1.5% & 3.0%
: Relay output at 1.5%
: Plug pack 240V/6V cable, c/w junction box & relay terminals cable.
: Calibration certificate
One Alarm repeater unit with 7M of quick connect cable c/w:- (RDU)
: CO2 & temp display
: Audible & visual alarms
The unit is supplied with fixing screws, 2 safety sheets, instructions & 12 month warranty.
Prices : 1-4 off $735.00 each Extra RDU Add $205.00 each (Max 3)
5-10 off $685.00 each Add $195.00 each
11-25 off $635.00 each Add $190.00 each
26-50 off $585.00 each
Please don’t ring me and state your case against what is happening here as I already know and understand what we do, and I have had these arguments with the relative authorities. They have accepted my arguments and understand our position but at the end of the day, they are not making the rules, they are just there to reinforce the rules which brings me to another point. The fines for not complying with this standard/regulations can be as high as $250,000.
As a director of U-Brew It , I would strongly suggest that you implement these changes and comply with the law.
The quote that I was given is valid for 30 days, so my plan is to lock in this price and pay for the monitors in early November. This will give you time to say put away $50.00 per week which will give you about $1200.00 at the beginning of November. As I said previously, I am not sure about the gas boards in the cool room yet. I am guessing that these changes could be in the vicinity of $500, but I am only guessing. I understand that it is an unexpected expense that you are going to have to bear but there is nothing I can do about it. As I am still investigating the gas boards in cool rooms, we may be able to some of the gauges and pipe work which is already in use.
